The Ledcor-Haisla Limited Partnership (LHLP) was awarded the complete engineering, procurement, and construction work for three new heavy haul bridges in Kitimat, BC. The project scope included designing and constructing a new temporary overpass over Alcan Way/Haisla Boulevard, a new heavy haul bridge over Moore Creek, and a new heavy haul bridge at the future location of the Anderson Creek diversion channel. It also included the supply and installation of piles for all bridges, formwork, rebar, concrete placement, bearing materials, concrete box girders for Moore Creek and Anderson Creek, and the prefabricated bridge installation.
The Heavy Haul Bridges included engineering, procurement, and construction work for two heavy haul bridges and a precast box culvert to accommodate up to 11,000-ton Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT).
Additionally, LHLP also provided the supply and installation of miscellaneous metals for the Anderson and Moore Creek bridges, deck waterproofing, and the supply and placement of the bridge deck asphalt. Other work involved haulage, placement, and compaction of suitable fill materials, tie-in earthworks, and ditch drainage for the haul road adjacent to the new prefabricated bridge. All work was performed following BC MOTI Specifications and CAN/CSA S-6 Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code.
LHLP worked through several conceptual design iterations to optimize the structures' design to ensure cost and schedule savings. LHLP was also responsible for coordinating onsite efforts with other scopes and contractors across the entire project to maximize efficiencies and account for constraints such as plant material/equipment deliveries into the bridgework's design and schedule.
Through this collaborative approach, LHLP completed the project five months early, facilitated construction efforts, and ensured the successful completion of the creek work within the in-water window (provincial in stream work windows), thus upholding Ledcor’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
