Ledcor led the construction team as the design-builder on this project. We were responsible for organizing construction activities, utility relocation, traffic management, HS&E coordination, Indigenous community relations, and close-out activities. We maintained complete governmental compliance on all fronts on this project. Brybil Design Services was Ledcor's design-build engineer. They provided complete drawings, geotechnical conditions, and ground consolidation. WSP was the owner's engineering.
The scope of this design-build project included the construction of a new two-lane bridge (with a sidewalk) to replace the existing aging bridge over the Kitimat River; realignment of the approach roads, sidewalks, and utilities; building new accesses to properties; and demolition of the old bridge.
There were environmental factors that added complexity and needed to be considered when working near the Kitimat River. These included working within specific windows and ensuring full compliance with all environmental protocols.
Additionally, access to the Kitimat River gravel bar was vital to key construction activities. The gravel bar was a low-lying piece of land that flooded periodically, so the team developed a method to forecast the risk of a flood event using dedicated cameras that monitored the water elevation.
