Ledcor leads the construction team as the design-builder on this project. We are responsible for organizing construction activities, utility relocation, traffic management, HS&E coordination, Indigenous community relations, and close-out activities. We maintain complete governmental compliance on all fronts on this project. Brybil Design Services is Ledcor's design-build engineer. They provide complete drawings, geotechnical conditions, and ground consolidation. WSP is the owner's engineering.
The scope of this design-build project includes the construction of a new two-lane bridge (with a sidewalk) to replace the existing aging bridge over the Kitimat River; realignment of the approach roads, sidewalks, and utilities; building new accesses to properties; and demolition of the old bridge.
There are environmental factors that add complexity and need to be considered when working near the Kitimat River. These include working within specific windows and ensuring full compliance with all environmental protocols.
Additionally, access to the Kitimat River gravel bar is vital to key construction activities. The gravel bar is a low-lying piece of land that floods periodically, so the team developed a method to forecast the risk of a flood event using dedicated cameras that monitor the water elevation.
