In 2015, Ledcor completed paving of the two-lane East Athabasca Highway in northern Alberta.
The highway improves connections to Suncor’s in situ Firebag site, Imperial Oil's Kearl site, and Husky Energy's Sunrise site, providing safe transportation to oil sands operations east of the Athabasca River.
Paving connects from the Old Canterra Road near the Shell Albian gate and extends approximately 44.5 kilometers (27.5 miles) eastward to connect again to the Old Canterra Road near the firebag site.
To pave the highway, we used 15,500 metric tons (17,085 short tons) of gravel base course and 173,500 metric tons (191,250 short tons) of asphalt/concrete pavement, with all aggregate crushed and asphalt produced on-site.
As the road operator, Suncor will manage road maintenance and monitor compliance to regulations on the roadway on behalf of the joint venture partners.
