In a push to improve broadband access across the state, the Illinois Department of Central Management Services partnered with local organizations to install and upgrade fiber optic cables in 55 rural and under-serviced counties. When completed, more than 400 community anchors - including education, healthcare, government, and public safety institutions - will be directly connected with over 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) of new or upgraded fiber.
Ledcor’s portion of the build included six distinct projects, totaling approximately 530 kilometers (330 miles) of construction, including installing and testing at anchor institutions. The new fiber backbone supports speeds of up to 1.6 terabits per second - hundreds of times faster than the current network.
