This 6-storey, 23,225 sq. m. (250,000 sf), complex learning and research facility includes classrooms, lecture halls, informal learning spaces, a multimedia recording room, an exhibition area, research spaces, and two, 6-storey atriums. It is home to the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Centre for Drug Research and Development, and an Animal Care Facility.
The project was constructed on a small site footprint within BC’s busiest university campus. Our team collaborated extensively with the design team and key stakeholders to create innovative spatial strategies to meet their diverse needs.
Sustainable features of this LEED Gold building include aggressive energy efficiency measures in the building system, extensive use of locally sourced wood products, full-height atriums that provide natural light while balancing the building’s temperature and ventilation, and lifecycle building management. During the construction phase, 75% of waste was diverted from the landfill.
The project received the 2013 Vancouver Regional Construction Association’s Gold Award of Excellence for Sustainable Construction.
