UBC Life Sciences Center

This LEED Gold certified, multi-disciplinary medical teaching and research facility was built over eight phases. The 5-storey, 51,100 sq. m. (550,000 sf) building contains three basement levels, a major level 2 vivarium, level 2 and 3 laboratories, offices, support spaces, two 350-seat lecture theaters, classrooms, administration offices, and a cafeteria. Phase 1 was commissioned on a fast-track basis of 30-months from design to building occupancy. The building is home to the UBC medical school, anatomy teaching labs, Centre for Disease Modeling, and the Centre for Blood Research.

Due to its many sustainability features, the UBC Life Sciences Centre is one of the greenest buildings in British Columbia. Ledcor was able to recoup or recycle 80 percent (1.3 million kg) of waste materials that were produced during construction. The building also emits 1000 tons fewer green-house gases, consumes 28 percent less energy and 50 percent less water in comparison to other buildings of similar size.
