Ledcor redeveloped a former three-level, 24,155 sq. m. (260,000 sq. ft.) Sears department store in Southgate Centre as a mall common area with new washrooms, 12 new retail units, and a new exterior loading dock. Work was performed in three phases: selective demolition and abatement, structural demolition and foundations, and redevelopment work. The focal point includes a three-level atrium with bleacher-style seating to attract patrons to the basement-level gathering space.
As work was ongoing during the COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual solution was used to keep the project on track and provide 360 photo updates to the out-of-town client, consultants, and tenants affected by travel restrictions.
Southgate Center remained fully open and operational throughout the project.
