Ledcor’s Infrastructure, Foundations, and Fort McMurray Heavy Civil teams recently collaborated on a bridge project for an existing oil sands client near Fort McMurray, Alberta. 

The Sharkbite Heavy Haul Bridge and Light-Duty Vehicle Underpass project contributed new infrastructure to support future mine expansion. The accomplishment exercised a “One Ledcor” approach by leveraging the strengths of multiple Ledcor operating groups to deliver a comprehensive and end-to-end solution to our client.   
 
The project scope included replacing an old bridge with a wider and stronger one capable of handling heavy haul mine trucks and pipelines. Additionally, a 91-meter-long (298.56-foot) underpass was constructed to allow light-duty vehicles to travel beneath a future mine haul road. An important aspect was the creation of a wildlife access corridor, which was constructed in strict adherence to federal and provincial environmental regulations.

The project faced unique challenges, including managing design schedules and quickly solving design and construction issues. To achieve this, our Infrastructure team worked closely with the client's team and third-party designers to ensure all parties were involved in making decisions in real-time. Additionally, effective communication played a crucial role in the project's success. Regular meetings were held to coordinate activities, address concerns, and optimize resource allocation. Resources were shared between Ledcor business units to ensure project milestones were met on time. 

In the end, the Sharkbite project was successfully completed in just 13 months, a remarkable feat considering projects of this size typically span multiple years. Crews worked 24/7 shifts, even braving extreme winter conditions for tasks usually reserved for milder seasons.
