Ledcor’s Copper Reclamation and Energy Transition Impact

The Ledcor Technical Services team reclaiming copper cables

Ledcor is committed to helping our lifetime clients achieve their sustainability goals. Working with large telecommunications companies, Ledcor Technical Services has been decommissioning legacy copper wire networks and replacing them with modern fibre-optic technology.

Replacing these legacy networks achieves many benefits. The new fibre networks are more energy efficient, durable, and weather resistant, which means fewer outages and repairs for clients and customers.

By repurposing a valuable commodity, Ledcor is also supporting the energy transition since the recycled material is used in new wind turbines, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and other energy-efficient equipment.

In 2024, the Ledcor Technical Services team reclaimed 380,000 pounds (172 tonnes) of copper – the equivalent of over 68 million pennies. Recycling this copper prevented nearly 500 tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to taking over 100 passenger vehicles off the road for a year. Reclaimed copper cables are processed into pure copper and sold back into the market, creating a circular economy, and supporting the supply of new copper.

By helping clients repurpose copper and transition to fibre-optic technology, Ledcor is not only contributing to a circular economy but also driving the shift to cleaner, more energy-efficient infrastructure.
