As part of Ledcor’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, managing a product’s end of life is just as important as sustainable procurement. One of the sustainability initiatives that highlights both Ledcor’s environmental commitment and dedication to delivering dependable client service is the use of retread tires.
Since 2022, Ledcor has been opting to use retread tires on some of our highway tractors and off-road construction equipment, such as graders and loaders. Replacing worn tire treads and keeping the tire casing uses a third of the oil compared to the amount required to manufacture a new tire.
Over the two years that Ledcor has been piloting this approach, it has prevented the consumption of over 43,000 litres (11,360 gallons) of oil and saved 700 medium truck tires from entering the landfill. In addition to reducing waste, retreading tires also lessens the need for new tire production which is highly energy intensive. Purchasing retreads also keeps fleets in operation at a lower cost. Retreads are 30-50% cheaper than new tires since manufacturing the casing accounts for much of the expense, and they deliver the same performance due to stringent industry standards.
By implementing retread tires, Ledcor has reduced environmental impact, increased cost savings, and maintained consistent operations, all while advancing our net-zero goals.
