Ledcor Cares

Ledcor is pleased to award the Ledcor Regional Company Award and Northern Community Achiever Award to student winners in Northern Alberta and British Columbia. The awards are part of Ledcor’s $200,000 commitment over five years to support Junior Achievement youth business education programs in both regions.

The Ledcor Regional Company Award and Northern Community Achiever Award recognizes winning students taking part in the JA Company Program outside of metropolitan areas. The program is an entrepreneurial training effort in high schools in both regions that inspires students to organize and operate an actual business. Students learn how businesses function and the benefits of the free enterprise system. Participants experience every facet of small business start-ups, including identifying a business need, generating starting capital, producing and pricing a product, and sales and marketing.

This year, students Maya Gay and Rachel Birrel of BASECAMP Cards from Okanagan Mission Secondary, won the British Columbia region’s Ledcor Regional Company Award. Their company BASECAMP Cards revolutionizes the classic deck of playing cards by incorporating ice-breaking, conversation prompting questions. These cards, although originally geared towards travelers and hostels, can be used in any situation, whether around the family dinner table, at corporate retreats, or a gathering around a campfire. Having recently won the Kelowna School District Dragons’ Den competition, these students are truly deserving of this award. 

The recipient of the 2015 Northern Community Achiever Award was Phoebe Reitz, the President of Polar DiversiTea in Fort McMurray. A returning student in grade 11, Phoebe has been involved with Junior Achievement and the Company Program for three years. The volunteer advisors for the student company believed her confidence and determination kept the company working well, and that she took every opportunity to take on challenges.

Ledcor volunteer, Les Kozma, Project Director at Ledcor Construction, also participated in Junior Achievement's Job Shadow Day, which kicks off the JA Company Program, and he was paired with returning student Nathan Woroschuk. Nathan had the opportunity to shadow Mr. Kozma for a day, and experience what a typical day is like at Ledcor.

Ledcor is proud to support youth in the British Columbian and Northern Alberta communities outside of the metropolitan areas by encouraging students to develop the essential skills needed to become future business leaders.
