On May 6th, the annual Walk so Kids Can Talk events were underway in over 39 cities across Canada, participation was in the 1000’s. The event is an initiative that takes place during Mental Health Week, and it brings people together over a common goal—raise money for Kids Help Phone to provide free, anonymous, 24-hour counselling services to young people struggling with their mental health.
2018 marked Ledcor’s 9th year of participation in the event, as they simultaneously became an official site sponsor at 3 of the walk’s locations—Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. Friends, families, and over 100 Ledcor employees gathered together to join the walk in May, but their support had begun many weeks before. All throughout April employees across the company participated in fundraising events including BBQs, cookie sales and raffles—raising over $10,000 in these activities alone.
The Edmonton team earned a top fundraiser award by raising over $4,700 through cookie sales and team participation. They enjoyed a beautiful sunny day visiting all their site locations to hand out treats and raise awareness. We’d like to acknowledge the Edmonton committee for their organization and support. A big thanks go out to Leanne Baker, Sue Roberts-Jewell, Sara Witzke, Bairbre Branley, Catherine Brady, Kelsey Jones, Meghan Thomson, and Kris Fulgham.
This year, was Calgary’s first time sponsoring the event and even though the weather was not still everyone came down to show their Ledcor spirit and complete the walk. With friends, families and dogs they raised over $4,500. Special thanks to Tracy Henderson, Kelly Henderson, Mike Kozakewich, Mike Burley, James Grant, Eric Cameron, Suzie Luzi and Elise Rowland for helping to make the Calgary event a huge success!
Our walkers in Vancouver raised over $91,000 through raffles, pizza lunches, and everybody’s favourite—bake sales. The total raised, with Ledcor match and support from our suppliers, was just over $152,000. Thanks to Captain Peter Hrdlitschka, and the committee of Laura Steffins, Sandra Pasqualini, Allison Parsons, Edward Collins, Eliana Carillo, Firman Basir, Grant Diener, Lindsay Gaff, Liz Grant, Lora Linklater, Randall Williams, Sarah Wong, Venus Choi and Victoria Thorpe for making this another Kids’ Help Phone success.
Ledcor has raised over $1,100,000 since the beginning of their involvement.
About The Walk
Walk so Kids Can Talk provides help and hope to young people everywhere, sending them the message that we walk together to make our world a more supportive place for them. Held on the first Sunday in May since 2002 – this walk is Canada’s largest for child and youth emotional health and well-being and celebrates Mental Health Week in Canada each year. The Walk allows Kids Help Phone to keep its services available to kids across Canada 24/7.
