Each year during the holiday season, demands for food and donations are high. With generous hearts, Ledcor employees brought forward an idea to lend a hand of support to the Red Deer Food Bank with our long-time client, NOVA Chemicals.
Ledcor employees have been working at the R3 NOVA expansion project for three years. The project site has an incentive program in place whereby for every 90 days that the team succeeds in maintaining a "graffiti free site" NOVA rewards the workforce by making a donation to a preferred charity and providing a catered lunch.
This time, the reward period coincides with a Red Deer Food Bank Society drive that Ledcor employees started on October 21, 2015 with the goal of raising 1,000 pounds of food. In a request to NOVA, Ledcor employees asked to have the funds for the catered lunch and donation redirected to the Red Deer Food Bank Society.
NOVA came on board immediately. To date, $15,000 and over 1,500 pounds of food have been donated; phenomenally more than the set goal. The teams will continue to collect food donations until December 16, 2015.
"The workforce stepped forward and said you know what, we've got good jobs here. They wanted to have that money donated to the food bank, so we brought that forward to NOVA and they took that forward and donated their cash to the food bank. It is just a great gesture by everybody to want to do that," said Chris Ostrikoff, General Superintendent at Ledcor Group.
As a result of this generous donation and others like it, the Red Deer Food Bank Society is looking at a 32 percent increase over last year across the board. They will be helping to feed hundreds more children than last year and thousands of people overall. Their goal is to service every one of their clients and make sure there is food on their tables.
"This means so much to the Society," said Fred Scaife, Executive Director at Red Deer Food Bank Society. "It's great to get a chance to meet some of the folks who were involved in it. We now realize that the community is behind us, that it validates the stuff we do, and shows the importance of having a food bank in this community."
