2015 marked the 11th anniversary of the Korol Cup Hockey Challenge. Players from all across Ledcor made their way to Kelowna September 24-27 for a weekend of teambuilding and camaraderie.
The 108 players from 12 Ledcor work groups spanning nine cities were joined by a number of Ledcor partners (subtrades and suppliers) to make up eight teams in total. Team Green prevailed as the 2015 Champion, with Paul Walker, Superintendent of Construction in Calgary, accepting the trophy on the ice from Trevor Korol’s father, David.
Trevor Korol, the namesake for this tournament, was a young enterprising individual with the promise of a great career at Ledcor. Following a tragic plane crash that claimed his life in 2008, the tournament was renamed in his honor and, in collaboration with his father, a fund was established to provide scholarships at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) for deserving technology students. Two additional endowment funds were established at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).
During the 2015 event, $58,175 was raised for the Trevor Korol Memorial Awards through tournament sponsorship, 50/50 draws, merchandise raffles, and other generous employee contributions. Ledcor matched the employee funds raised, and a total of $64,000 was donated. Over the past eight years, the Korol Cup has contributed a total of $240,544 toward the fund!
The event was once again an outstanding success thanks to the efforts of the organizing committee, 27 volunteers, 38 sponsors, and of course, the players who came out in great form for this worthy cause.
The 2016 tournament will take place September 22 – 25.
