The Amiskwaciy Academy's new traditional sweat lodge officially opens today in Edmonton. Elder Francis Whiskeyjack guided Ledcor, Stantec, and subcontractors—who each donated time and materials—in building a customary, circular structure using cedar, pine, and spruce.
The community now has a traditional space to join sweat ceremonies and to continue cultural learning. Students in the academy's construction class helped raise structural columns and secure willow branches at the room’s centre.
We are grateful to the Amiskwaciy community for inviting us to contribute to such a significant project, and for the opportunity to share our knowledge with local students as we worked alongside one another.
Ledcor employees donated over 800 hours of construction, which included instructing the local students on all stages of the process—the most satisfying part of the project! At Ledcor, we believe in assisting our local communities by coming together and supporting projects like this.
