Ledcor Receives 2014 Best Practices Award for Winter Safety Efforts

Ledcor is proud to be honored with the 2014 Construction Owners Association of Alberta (COAA) Best Practices Award for large organizations. The award recognized the company's "proven work processes and outstanding practitioners" as part of its efforts to protect against winter-related accidents.

The awards celebrate companies and organizations that provide "outstanding leadership in developing, implementing and improving industry best practices which have led to measurable advances in project, company or industry performance." In 2014 the award focused on "safety leadership."

The winter safety procedures that led to Ledcor's nomination for the award were introduced after a regular management review of high potential incidents noted the recurrence of winter-related incidents. Action was immediately taken to ensure staff could work as safely as possible in winter conditions on an ongoing basis.

This included the creation of a standard site preparation plan and a checklist of mitigation actions, as well as an annual all-project leadership review that kicks off the Winter Works campaign to ensure sites are ready for cold weather and snow.

Ledcor procedures have since been recognized by other organizations, and are being used as the basis for a COAA Best Practice.

When nominating Ledcor for the COAA award, NOVA Chemicals commented, "Ledcor's demonstrated abilities in this area were a key consideration in selecting them as a partner in this project. They have led the safety program on the project with proven work processes and outstanding practitioners."

"Most importantly, they brought with them and have established a very evident and sustainable safety culture that has spread to all that work on the project. Their leadership in implementing a winter readiness program on this project is one example."

Award judges included a current COAA Director, the Executive Director of a safety training organization, and the Executive Director of a Government of Alberta safety branch.

The judges noted that all of the nominations for the two large and small organization awards should be celebrated as notable contributions to the Alberta heavy industrial construction sector.

Ledcor received the award at a ceremony on Tuesday May 13th as part of COAA's 2014 Best Practices Conference.
