Each year, the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) hosts their annual Awards of Excellence. This year, 43 award winners were selected based on innovation, selection of materials, and project management expertise. On October 5th, one Silver winner from each category was awarded Gold.
Of the three Silver winners in the category of General Contractor for Projects Over $45 million, two were Ledcor projects: YVR A-B Connector and Marine Gateway.
YVR A-B Connector
The YVR A-B Connector Project was the first infrastructure project completed as part of YVR’s 10-year gateway strategy announced in 2012 to keep YVR competitive and an economic generator for the province of BC.
The new expansion adds retail outlets, restaurants, a food court and a level four lounge/office space, creating a smooth transition space for arriving and departing domestic passengers with direct connections to and from the International Terminal.
Ledcor coordinated the construction schedule with the Vancouver International Airport Authority and Stantec Architecture to adapt to YVR’s strict operational restrictions and gate capacity requirements.
The project was delivered on budget and schedule, and approximately 97% of the construction waste and demolition materials were recycled. Some of the challenges faced and overcome to make this a reality included working within an operational airport that runs 24/7 and working in a security-controlled environment, which made material deliveries and worker access more difficult.
In 2015, Ledcor received a congratulatory letter from YVR on our excellent safety performance. At the peak of the project there were an estimated 600 workers on site, and our safety record on site was 1,557,172 man hours and 1,094 consecutive days with no lost time incidents.
Marine Gateway
Marine Gateway is a transit-oriented, 1,500,000 f2 mixed-use development located at a significant new transit node in south Vancouver.
The project included below grade parking, a neighborhood plaza, two residential towers that include market and rental units, an office tower, a retail podium, and a Cineplex theater complex.
The project is targeting an aggressive sustainable design strategy, LEED Gold, by sourcing local products and recycling construction waste throughout the project. It includes geothermal heating and cooling with an ambient heat recovery energy loop with thermal mass and sun shading devices.
We would like to congratulate a number of our sub-trades, who also won silver in their own prospective categories for work on Ledcor projects. These are:
