Ledcor Recognized with VRCA Gold for UBC Bioenergy Research & Demonstration Facility

October 23, 2014

From L to R: Leung Chow (McFarland Marceau Architects), Mike Champion (UBC), Richard Aarestad (Ledcor), Larry McFarland (McFarland Marceau Architects), Dianna Foldi (UBC), Marie-Odile Marceau (McFarland Marceau Architects).

We are proud to have been recognized as the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) 2014 Gold Project Winner in the General Contractors for projects up to $15 Million category for the UBC Bioenergy Research & Demonstration Facility.

Ledcor was among British Columbia’s top construction contractors honored at the 26TH Annual VRCA Awards of Excellence gala dinner on October 16, 2014. The event recognized the province’s best companies, individuals, and projects in the industry. Three Silver Award winners were selected this past August in 12 different categories for their use in innovative techniques, new materials, safety control, and exceptional project management. One Silver Award winner from each category was awarded the Gold Award of Excellence at the gala, after selected judges visited the work sites. In this year’s VRCA awards competition, 149 projects were submitted and 31 projects were considered for judging.

The UBC Bioenergy Research & Demonstration Facility is a four-story wedge-shaped building that contains North America’s first commercial-scale, biomass-fueled heat and power system. Ledcor’s participation in the development of the 21,000 square foot, LEED-certified building allows the university’s natural gas consumption to be reduced by up to 12 percent.

The building was constructed using cross-laminated timber (CLT).  CLT is an innovative wood-based structural system that demonstrates low carbon, low environmental impact, and BC-based building technologies. It is promoted as a replacement for steel or concrete in multi-story residential and commercial buildings.   At the time of construction, it was the largest cross-laminated timber building in Canada.

Ledcor was also proud to take home one of the 2014 VRCA Silver Award in the General Contractors for projects over $55 Million category for the Guildford Town Centre Redevelopment project. Ledcor’s expertise in green building has been essential to the Ivanhoé Cambridge redevelopment project, and Guildford Town Centre is now seeking to become the first LEED Gold certified shopping mall in Canada.

Trades contractors working on Ledcor projects were also recognized at the awards ceremony. Congratulations go out to:
